As on his famous triumphs Metropolis and Die Nibelungen, German director Fritz Lang collaborated again with his then wife Thea Von Harbou the script of the haunting story. Peter Lorre because an overnight sensation with his portrayal as the globe-eyed child murderer Heinz Beckert hunted by both the law and the underworld of Berlin that had a huge impact on audiences in the early 1930s.

Still unaccustomed to radio and with television yet to make its debut, people relied on newspapers to follow the actual shocking wave of child murders that rocked Germany during the years before.

Lorre became the personification of all these events, shooting him to stardom but also, in the long run, making him unhappy as he was continually typecast as a psychotic killer.
