Eureka! Classics | The Other, based on a novel by former actor Tom Tryon and directed by Robert Mulligan (renowned for his Oscar® nominated work on To Kill a Mockingbird), tells the tale of two nine-year-old twins, Niles and Holland (played by real life twins Chris and Martin Udvarnoky), who live with their family on a Connecticut farm in the 1930s. They are taught by their grandmother (legendary German actress Uta Hagen) to play a supernatural game. When accidents occur and events take a murderous twist, the increasingly unsettling relationship between the twins comes under scrutiny.

Mulligan’s psychological horror film is comparable to William Friedkin’s The Exorcist, released a year later in 1973, Richard Donner’s The Omen (1976), and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980). Like these classic genre films, The Other depicts deeply disturbed children, and has gained a huge reputation for its haunting atmosphere and moody cinematography, of which critic Roger Ebert has described as ”perverse and menacing”.

Now on DVD for the first time ever, we proudly present this eerie, almost lost-part of horror film history.
