With Christmas and New Year festivities out of the way, we are all geared up for some stunning releases.
Hitting cinema screens nationwide at the end of the month Tokyo Sonata – The latest film from Kiyoshi Kurosawa – the hugely acclaimed Japanese director famous for his groundbreaking, existential horror films such as Cure and Pulse – set Cannes alight last year with a surprising change of pace to, that staple of Japanese cinema, the family drama. On the 26th January we have 4 releases:
Kicking off the DVD releases we have Shogun’s Samurai – From the director of Tora! Tora! and Battle Royale – veteran Japanese filmmaker, Kinji Fukasaku and starring one of the greatest martial arts stars Sonny Chiba, Shogun’s Samurai is an all out action epic tale of loyalty and betrayal, political intrigue, battles and spectacular sword fights in true Japanese style.
Next up is Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow – one of the most loved Italian films of all time, staring ACADEMY AWARD Winner Sofia Loren (Two Women) and Marcello Mastroianni (La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2) who won Best Foreign Actor at the BAFTAs in 1965 for his performance. Directed by Vittorio De Sica – the great Italian neo-realist director of Shoeshine and Bicycle Thieves. Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow will be available for the first time ever on DVD in the UK, uncut and in its original aspect ratio.
Another Italian release: Rod Steiger (In The Heat Of The Night, On The Waterfront) heads an all star international cast as Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini in Carlo Lizzani’s Last Days Of Mussolini. And finally a studio classic: James Cagney gives an unforgettable performance as Lon Chaney in this engrossing true story that follows the life and loves of one of the most iconic and mysterious stars in Hollywood history! Featuring a stellar cast including Dorothy Malone (The Big Sleep) and Jane Greer (Out Of The Past), Man Of A Thousand Faces captures the dramatic private life of a humble vaudeville clown who rose to become one of the biggest stars the world has ever seen!
