March releases

Monday 26th march saw the release of three stunning films on Blu-ray and DVD.

First the most electrifying, edge-of-the-seat crime dramas of recent years – The Yellow Sea, courtesy of our friends at Bounty Films. With a series of escalating action sequences and one of the most compelling character dramas in recent history it’s no wonder The Yellow Sea is being regarded by many as the best new crime drama
of recent years.

In the Masters of Cinema series two films by legendary
director Pier Paolo Pasolini – Accattone & The Gospel According to Matthew –
both are released for the first time on Blu-ray and are crammed to burting
point with extras.

February new releases

February sees the release of the complete series of Who Pays the Ferryman?. This long requested 1977 BBC series written by Michael J. Bird writer of The Lotus Eaters is presented here newly-restored and for the first time in the UK in a 3 disc set.

Coming in February we also have 2 very special releases in the Masters of Cinema Series. First up, Repo Man arguably the defining cult film of the Reagan era, the feature debut of Alex Cox (Sid & Nancy, Walker, Straight to Hell) is a genre-busting mash-up of atomic-age science fiction, post-punk anarchism, and conspiracy paranoia, all shot through with heavy doses of deadpan humour and offbeat philosophy. The limited Edition Blu-ray is available in both standard or super limited edition SteelBook packaging.

Along side this we have a Dual format Blu-ray & DVD release Shohei Imamura’s The Insect Woman. Elliptically plotted, brimming over with black humour and taboo material, and immaculately staged in crystalline NikkatsuScope, The Insect Woman is arguably Imamura’s most radical and emphatic testament to female resilience.

We’re giving away 3 sets of these releases, to be in with a chance to win a set simply like us on Facebook before Friday 24th February. Winners will be announced on Facebook shortly after that date.

New printed catalogue and fresh editions

We are receiving lots of emails each day about the unavailability of certain MoC editions. The London riots in August 2011 saw the destruction of the Sony DADC distribution centre in Enfield. Our stock, along with that of many other labels, was destroyed. MoC catalogue titles are slowly being reprinted or upgraded and will be available as soon as possible. New upgraded Dual Format editions of SUNRISE, CITY GIRL, and PROFOUND DESIRES OF THE GODS are already available, and M, FOR ALL MANKIND, and MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW will be ready very soon.

Full up-to-date details of what is out-of-print (OOP) and what is being upgraded can be found in our new printed catalogue which is also available here as a pdf.

April Releases

From the Masters of Cinema Series April sees the release of F. W. Murnau’s breathtaking City Girl (made available on DVD for the first time in the Series) and a two-DVD set of Fritz Lang’s jaw-dropping 1959 “Indian epic”: Der Tiger von Eschnapur [The Tiger of Eschnapur] and Das indische Grabmal [The Indian Tomb].

April also sees the re-release of US indie sensation Junebug on both DVD and Blu-ray. Critically observed as being a small quiet miracle (The Telegraph) and of having breathtaking visual textures (Time Out), Junebug is presented here, anamorphically in its original aspect ratio to replicate the theatrical experience as closely as possible, and filled with extras.

Also getting a re-issue this month is the hilarious cult TV series Maid Marian and her Merry Men – Series 1-4. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll be sick into a small paper bag and still come back for more… honest!

First Releases of 2011

January sees the release of the box set Late Mizoguchi: Eight Films, 1951-1956 which compiles our four earlier releases of eight films by one of the directors who looms largest across cinema history: Kenji Mizoguchi. This box reproduces all the booklets and supplements of the single releases, but consolidates them into a single, low-price package.

In February, due to demand we will be issuing DVD edition of four previously Blu-ray-only titles Profound Desires of the Gods, The Burmese Harp, Make Way for Tomorrow, Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?, and shortly after in March City Girl.

Also in March, the first batch of our dual format releases —containing both a Blu-ray and a DVD version of the respective films — Michelangelo Antonioni’s La signora senza camelie (aka The Lady Without Camelias) and Le amiche

Metropolis & October releases

As I type Metropolis is showing at cinemas nationwide, click the link to visit the microsite to see where it is showing near you. Unseen, in its current form, in cinemas since 1927 the reconstructed and restored Metropolis is the closest to Fritz Lang’s “director’s cut” since its original release.

In October we will be releasing Just Good Friends — The complete series 1-3 and Christmas Special. Newly restored by the BBC and available for the first time in its entirety – including the long unseen 1984 Christmas special – John Sullivan’s classic sit-com is still as endearing and enjoyable as when it first aired.

In the Masters of Cinema series in October, Leo McCarey’s Make Way For Tomorrow and Frank Tashlin’s Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? both on Blu-ray for the first time anywhere in the world.

We’re just finishing work on our next one, animated fantasy epic Wizards, directed by animation maestro Ralph Bakshi the disc is packed to bursting point with extras and is released on 24/05/10.
November releases/Christmas sale

This November we are blood soaked, soul infused, and visiting a Blu moon!

First up the bloody, riveting, and ultra-stylish Lone Wolf and Cub box set, containing all six Lone Wolf and Cub films as well as the film that single-handedly created legions of new fans of Japanese action cinema, originally prosecuted as a video nasty, Shogun Assassin. Each film is accompanied by liner notes from Tom Mes.

Next up, a film we’ve been dancing around the office to for a while now, after touring cinemas around the country, Soul Power is released on DVD and Blu-ray. Directed by Jeffrey Levy-Hinte, editor of Leon Gast’s Oscar®-winning (Best Documentary) When We Were Kings, and sourced from the same archival pool, Soul Power features a legendary line-up of African and African-diaspora musicians – all of whom are at the very peak of their creative powers.

And last, but by no means least, For All Mankind comes to DVD and Blu-ray in the form of a director-approved special edition. Assembled from hundreds of hours of the astronauts’ own footage, with a soundtrack made up of their memories and a specially composed score by Brian Eno, the film takes the form of one journey to the moon and back again, building with elegant simplicity and exquisite construction to create an overpowering vision of human endeavour and miraculous experience.

We don’t have any releases this December, but keep your eyes peeled for news of our January releases.

Don’t forget to check out our Christmas sale!
