Sammy and Rosie get laid

I wonder whether I'm the only person in the world who dearly misses this early Stephen Frears film "Sammy & Rosie" (1987) as a DVD-release. I even can't remember it beeing broadcasted on TV (speaking for Germany) in nearly 30 years. Are there not a bunch of addicts in Britain as well? Did I miss something related to censorship or copyright...? Happy to hear anything about publishing history, licencies, ownership etc.

The Human Condition

I would love for you to release a restored Blu-ray boxset of Masaki Kobayashi's magnum opus The Human Condition, which is easily one of the finest war films ever released but which does not have an HD release anywhere in the world.

Any plans for re-issues?

Are there likely to be any plans for a re-issue of Ugetsu Monogatari? Or a Dual-Format release of Twenty Four Eyes?

Started learning Japanese this year and I've been on the look out for any books, films, etc. that I could use to help me study. Mainly looking for older Japanese films rather than modern anime as I'm guessing that they would be less likely to be full of slang and use more 'correct' grammar (the Japanese equivalent of the BBC accent?)

I appreciate that you are a relatively small publisher specialising in very selective releases, so I completely understand that it is impossible for you to keep everything in print all of the time.

I notice that it seems all of the films by Kenji Mizoguchi are now out-of-print. Gearing up for a box-set release? ::hopefull face::

I've already got a few of your other releases in this selection (Onibaba, Kuroneko, the Shohei Imamura box-set, etc.) so I have plenty to keep me going for a while.

Thanks for your efforts in preserving these films.

A Matter Of Life & Death

I would echo others here and think Powell & Pressburger would fit perfectly with the Masters of Cinema ethos.  I have been waiting a long time for A Matter Of Life & Death to be released on blu-ray.  The omission is surprising since many of their titles have had widespread blu-ray releases.  This film would be an obvious collectable for enthusiasts and the cinematography (mainly black & white) is of course, gorgeous.

French cinema

Nearly forgot!  Still waiting for some French cinema classics such as Cyrano De Bergerac (1990), and a double-pack of Jean De Florette and Manon Des Sources would be great too!

The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse (1960)

This has already been released as part of the Mabuse trilogy DVD box set, but as both Der Spieler and Das Testament have been released on blu-ray, I'd love to see a re-release of Die 1000 Eyes in Full HD.

Visconti

I'd pay anything for proper releases of films by Luchino Visconti, including a re-release in Dual Format of Bellissima (1951).

I'd be most keen on titles currently unavailable (or barely available) in the UK: Senso (1954), Le notti bianche (1957), Vaghe stelle dell'orsa (1965), Lo straniero (1967), La caduta degli dei (1969) and Ludwig (1972) - all absolute masterpieces of European cinema.

McCabe and Mrs Miller

Obviously Robert Altman's McCabe and Mrs Miller should be included in the MoC series (after its release in the Criterion Collection). William Friedkin's Wages Of Fear, Otto Preminger's Daisy Kenyon, William Fraker's Monte Walsh, Robert Montgomery's Ride The Pink Horse, Powell and Pressburger's Gone To Earth, Carol Reed's The Key

Howard Hawks

I hope these films of Howard Hawks will be released on Blu-ray in The Master of Cinema series:

Scarface (1931)

Bringing Up Baby (1938)

Sergeant York (1941)

I Was a Male War Bride (1949)

The Big Sky (1952)

William A. Wellman

Here are some films by William A. Wellman I hope to see on Blu-ray in The Master of Cinema series:

Beau Geste (1939)

The Story of G. I. Joe (1945)

Yellow Sky (1948)

Battleground (1949)

Westward the Women (1951)

Island in the Sky (1953)

Darby's Rangers (1957)

A Face in the Crowd

In the context of Trump's ascension in the US and the rise of populism in the UK, I think we'll *all* benefit from getting Elia Kazan's A Face in the Crowd released here.

Mary Pickford Films

To my knowledge not one Mary Pickford silent film has ever been released in the UK. Even in America some of her films are becoming hard to find (some of the out of print DVD's from Milestone are going for silly prices). I know that many people who have never seen one of her films just dismiss her and think often (incorrectly) that all she played was little girls, but Mary Pickford was so much more. You have only to watch classics like 'My Best Girl', Stella Maris, Sparrows, Tess of the Storm Country, Suds (the list goes on and on) to realise just what a versatile acctress she was. She was the first great movie star and is almost forgotten today mainly because of the unavailablilty of her films (at least in good prints). The Mary Pickford Foundation have mastered a number of her films in HD, could not the Masters of Cinema bring some these classics to Blu- Ray and let this forgotten genius be rediscovered

Terence Davies, Chantal Akerman

Would love to see some of Terence Davies' films given the MoC-treatment, especially Distant Voices, Still Lives and The Long Day Closes

Fritz Lang's You And Me, his curious American social drama

Chantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman. Golden Eighties and Nuit et jour. Jeanne Dielman was recently restored by the Belgian Film Archive and should be available on Blu-ray in Europe.

Future MoC additions

There must be thousands of films I wish to see join the MoC collection. Here are some:

'Greed' (1924)

'The Crowd' (1928)

'Dodsworth' (1936)

'The Naked Spur' (1953)

'Tokyo Olympiad' (1965)

'Sorcerer' (1977) - 40th anniversary is coming up next year

'After Hours' (1985)

'Hoop Dreams' (1994)

In fact any classic film that doesn't already have a UK Home Entertainment release...

A couple more suggestions

Youssef Chahine's 'Cairo Station' (1958)

Francesco Rosi' 'Christ Stopped at Eboli' (1979)

If I may also tempt madames

If I may also tempt madames and monsieurs with the suggestion of Robert Montgomery's 'Ride the Pink Horse' (1947) as a future MoC addition?

My list

Bela Tarr - Satantango

Edward Yang - Tapei Story

Hou Hsiao-Hsien - A City of Sadness, The Puppetmaster, The Flowers of Shanghai, The Flight of the Red Balloon

Alfred Hitchcock - The Ring, Blackmail (silent version preferable, maybe include the inferior sound version in a deluxe package), The Birds (only if you can solve the overprocessed look of the US release), Marnie (fix the bad encode that plagues the US release)

Luchino Visconti - The Leopard (the Film Foundation restoration - still not available on an English language BD for no good reason)

Jacques Demy - Lola (without the horrible DNR on the current BD edition in the U.S.)

The Big Parade (solve the frame rate issue on the U.S. release)

Alain Resnais - Muriel (new 4k restoration but fix the bad color timing seen on the US release)

Gus Van Sant - My Own Private Idaho (4k scan, but fix the incorrect color timing on the US release)

Akira Kurosawa - Ran (4k scan, but again fix the incorrect color timing on the US release)

Orson Welles - The Trial (fix the bad DNR on the current release)

Michael Powell - Peeping Tom (Film Foundation restoration - still not available on a BD anywhere)

Max Ophüls - The Earrings of Madame de... (fix the DNR issues plaguing the US BD release)

Grown-Ups (Mike Leigh's BBC film)

René Clair - The Italian Straw Hat

Terence Davies - Distant Voices, Still Lives

Bill Forsyth - Housekeeping, Local Hero

Frank Borzage - Man's Castle

Elaine May - Mikey and Nicky

Luis Buñuel - Los Olvidados

Barbara Loden - Wanda (recent restoration)

made a typo - should be

made a typo - should be "Taipei Story" by Edward Yang.

A few suggestions

May I suggest these films:

Child's Play (dir Sidney Lumet - on Olive Films in the US)

One-Eyed Jacks (Marlon Brando - on Criterion in the US)

Oh! Rosalinda (Powell and Pressburger - available nowhere!)

Red Sorghum (Zhang Yimou)

Ju Dou (Zhang Yimou)

Thanks for reading this!

What about a re-batch

Hi. Since the film Metropolis is turning 90 this year, will it be possible to do a re-release (limited or not) of the "Special Collector's Edition" like you did back in 2015 ? Which included (in a steelbook box) both the completed film, the Moroder version & the documentary "Metropolis Refound" (as special elements  with the regular "complete" version) ? I think it'll be a nice way to mark this release anniversary (and also a nice way for new collectors to jump in this band wagon). Any new additions with this will be welcome, I'm sure.

So ? Will this be bossible to achieve ?

Thanks to answer

Der Tiger von Eschnapur

Although MoC released Der Tiger von Eschnapur & Der Tiger von Eschnapur on DVD a blu-ray version was hinted at. The two films have a marvelous colour palette that would benefit from a remastered blu-ray release.

Yesterday

We were expecting some announcements yesterday, what happened?

In honour of the late great Seijun Suzuki's passing, it would be great to finally be able to see his Taishou Trilogy: Zigeunerweisen (1980), Kagero-za (1981), and Yumeji (1991).
