Two films by G.W. Pabst feature amongst our July releases

Steve-Eureka

Our July titles have now all been announced.

Georg Wilhelm Pabst (Pandora’s Box, Diary of a Lost Girl) made a flawless transition from silent to sound filmmaking with, Westfront 1918 and Kameradschaft, a pair of strongly anti-war titles (Pabst himself was a prisoner of war for the duration of WWI) that combined elements of Expressionism and New Objectivity to stunning effect. Sharing many thematic elements, as well as key cast and crew (most notably cinematographer Fritz Arno Wagner, M, Nosferatu, Der müde Tod), Westfront 1918 and Kameradschaft represents a master director at the height of his powers. Westfront 1918 and Kameradschaft (Two films by G.W. Pabst), will be released as part of The Masters of Cinema Series in a Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) edition on 24 July 2017.

Following its theatrical release (on 9 June), the previously announced, Der müde Tod , will be released as part of the Masters of Cinema in a Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) edition. Rich in expressionist imagery and featuring innovative special effects work, Der müde Tod has often been overlooked amongst Lang’s early work, but has been hugely influential, with directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and Luis Buñuel citing it as a direct influence on their work. Now in 2017, in a new restoration by Anke Wilkening on behalf of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung, this definitive presentation of Der müde Tod preserves the original German intertitles and simulates the historic colour tinting and toning of its initial release.  The film is accompanied by a newly-composed score by Cornelius Schwehr as a commissioned composition by ZDF / ARTE which was originally performed by the 70-member Berlin Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Frank Strobel, at Berlinale 2016. Check out our New and Exclusively commissioned trailer here

The July line up will be completed by a re-issue of Man with a Movie Camera, which will be re-issued as a 2-disc Blu-ray set.
